JOE KARLIN APPOINTED TO FILL VACANT WARD 1 COUNCIL SEAT

Joe Karlin, a Lenexa Planning Commission member for the past four years and an active Lenexa resident of 17 years, was appointed to the City Council Tuesday night, filling the Ward 1 position that became vacant when former Councilmember Jane Klein passed away last month.

Karlin brings a broad perspective of the city, having lived in and served on the homes association boards for the Oak Park and Brookwood subdivisions, in Wards 4 and 1, respectively, before moving to his current home in the Parkhurst subdivision. Karlin is a graduate of Leadership Lenexa, has served on the Holy Trinity Finance Committee and the Pastoral Planning Committee, teaches in the Junior Achievement program, is a member of the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School PTA and is active with his children in various volunteer coaching positions.

Karlin owns a small business in Lenexa and currently is employed as a banking consultant. Prior to that, he worked 14 years in management with U.S. Central Credit Union and three years with Deloitte & Touche. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1989.

“Lenexa is an incredible city with a lot to offer citizens,” Karlin said. “I have enjoyed serving the community as a member of the Planning Commission, and I consider it an honor to be appointed to the City Council. I look forward to working with members of the community, the Governing Body and city staff as we continue to make Lenexa an excellent place to live and raise a family.”

Mayor Mike Boehm appointed Karlin, with the unanimous approval of the City Council, and Karlin was sworn in at the May 19 council meeting. In accordance with city code, Karlin will serve in this position until the next regular city election in 2011. At that time he will have to run for re-election for the remaining two years of the term. Mayor Boehm received applications from seven residents for the position. He thanked the candidates for their commitment and genuine interest in serving the community.
