LENEXA HOSTS SELF DEFENSE TRAINING AT COMMUNITY CENTER

The Lenexa Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free self-defense class for women and girls ages 12 years and older on Wednesday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lenexa Community Center.

The two-hour class, led by specially trained professionals and volunteers, is presented by The Ali Kemp Educational (T.A.K.E.) Foundation in cooperation with the Johnson County Park and Recreation District, City of Leawood Parks and Recreation Department and the Blue Valley Recreation Commission.

T.A.K.E. Defense program represents a living legacy in honor of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood, Kansas resident who was murdered while working as a lifeguard at a neighborhood pool in Johnson County. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and to give women ages 12 and older the self-protection skills they need to avoid becoming victims of violent crime. Participants will learn basic self-defense techniques, which could save their lives. To date, T.A.K.E. Defense program has educated over 26,000 women in self-defense.

To register for the class, contact the Lenexa Community Center at 913-541-0209. Registering in pairs such as mother/daughter or with a friend is strongly recommended. There is no charge for the training, but all participants must sign a waiver. Waivers are available at the T.A.K.E. Defense website at www.takedefense.org. Please bring the signed waiver to class. Participants under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian signature.

The Lenexa Community Center is located at 13420 Oak Street at the intersection of Santa Fe Trail Drive and Pflumm Road in Old Town Lenexa. For more information, please visit the T.A.K.E. Defense website at www.takedefense.org.
